Spinal Cord Injuries

The spinal cord is the column of nerve tissue protected by the spine and is responsible for delivering messages from the brain to the rest of the body. A spinal cord injury can damage or destroy this conduit, resulting in permanent disability or paralysis. Paralysis may involve all four extremities (quadriplegia) or only the lower body (paraplegia). A spinal cord injury is usually caused by a hard blow to a person’s spine.

THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF SPINAL CORD INJURY INCLUDE:

  • Car, truck and motorcycle crashes
  • Slip and fall accidents
  • Sports injuries
  • Medical malpractice
  • Workplace accidents
  • Acts of violence, such as gunshot or knife wounds

SPINAL CORD INJURIES OF ANY KIND MAY RESULT IN ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:

  • Loss of movement
  • Loss or altered sensation, including the ability to feel heat, cold and touch
  • Loss of bowel or bladder control
  • Exaggerated reflex activities or spasms
  • Changes in sexual function, sexual sensitivity and fertility
  • Pain or an intense stinging sensation caused by damage to the nerve fibers in the spinal cord
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing or clearing secretions from the lungs
  • Depression
  • Circulation problems

The physical and emotional consequences of a spinal cord injury can be devastating. The spinal cord does not need to be severed for function to be lost; both motor and sensory functions may be lost due to bruising, compression or tearing. A spinal cord injury can take away a person’s independence and make everyday life much more difficult. These injuries require extensive medical care and can even lead to death. Spinal cord injury victims have the option of filing a personal injury lawsuit to recover compensation if their injury was caused by another’s negligence.
